2001

May - One of six new coaches due in 2001 arrives in Skagway.

Digital photo provided by the White Pass

June - Looking south toward Fraser BC from the highway in early April 1999.

July - White Pass staff prepare their float for the 4th of July parade in 2000.

August - The cantilever bridge celebrates its centennial in 2001. Photo from early April 1999.

September - Ken Anderson and Gwen Holdmann, successful finishers in the Iditarod and Yukon Quest Sled Dog races, ride the Lake Bennett Adventure in June of 2000. Gwen appears in the interesting Brian Patrick O'Donoghue book Honest Dogs - A Story of Triumph and Regret from the World's Toughest Sled Dog Race. For more on Gwen and Ken, check out their web site at Windy Creek Kennel or do a Google search for their latest biographies and race results.

October - In remembrance of those from all nations who died September 11, 2001

November - The last of the five new 2001 coaches#328, the Stewart River and #330, the Peace Riverare put on the rails on October 19, 2001

2002

January - Engine #40 and its tender were originally leased in 2000 from the Georgetown Loop in Colorado for five years, but were returned to Colorado after completion of their second year of the lease. Here they are at the Colorado Railroad Museum roundhouse

February - On an unused siding at Bennett, two passengers test the theory that the distance between rails was first chosen by railway tycoons (or maybe movie producers) as the distance between the ankles and neck of the average damsel-in-distress. Lacking a willing damsel, they did the best they could.

March - The WP&YR depot has a great mural (half shown in this photo) of the history of the area with emphasis on the railroad. Be sure to check it out when you're in Skagway.

For April, I think we're due for a Fool, so here are some April 1999 photos showing possibly why engineers should not leave their locomotive.

To be fair, I must admit that the lower photo doesn't have any bearing on the upper two, above.

May - No rotary run will occur this year so here's a photo from the April 1999 run. In addition to the rotary with it's two diesel pushers (ahead and out of view), a chartered passenger train followed filled with train & travel buffs and White Pass employees. Here we have a stop scheduled for the passengers to see their train from the deep snow at Glacier. It'll even be deeper at the Summit!

June - Can you understand the smile on the brakeman's face? Who wouldn't be happy working in the beautiful Lake Bennett area?

July - See text above for June, but substitute conductor in place of brakeman. As above, the passengers are half-done with their journey today and are off the train eating their lunch in the Eatin' Room of the Bennett station or on a guided walking tour with Parks Canada staff.

August - July 6, 2002 saw an interesting sight at Fraser BC—a caboose on a passenger train! Oh yes, a wedding party, too. Congratulations, Jon and Michaelea.

September - A wave to photographers from the train staff and visitors on their way to Bennett after crossing the Klondike Highway at Log Cabin.

October - Do coaches get flat tires? Is this how they're repaired?

November - Here's the first day cover of the WP&YR stamp as well as the companion stamps issued in the 2001 tourism stamps of Canada Post mentioned elswehere in this web site;

first day of issue 11May2001

December - A Two-fer: an old-style WP&YR envelope and a used pass that allowed a waitress to return to Skagway after completing her time at Bennett's station.
