The Centennial festivities included many events, many of them occurring until canvas. Here we have musicians performing on musical saws.
The day's events also included a spike-driving competition.
Beyond the interest in the WP&YR's centennial throughout the region, I'm sure that many came for the free up-to-thirty-minute steam train rides along the shores of Lake Bennett. The RCMP was there and maybe because of their presence, there was order in queuing for these free rides.
A narrator's view from the cupola during the free rides. The lucky passengers in Coach 211 may also have had the chance to ride up here for a few minutes.
Dignitaries from the WP&YR, its parent corporation, those with ties to the WP&YR and interested visitors start to gather in front of the Carcross station before the Golden Spike Ceremony.
Another cupola view, now of the site for the festivities, with the RCMP, Duchess and big top in the background.
There were many in period dress for the centennial, but without doubt, the person most at ease in his clothing was Lord Denman who came from Great Britain as the representative of the Close Brothers, the financiers of the WP&YR over a century ago. Of course, having two WP&YR staff in close attendance didn't hurt either, I'd guess.
Just as in the Bennett Centennial a year earlier and the First Spike Centennial the year before that, Brendan Heney sets the ceremonial Golden Spike.
Whack!
About to be surrounded by dance hall girls from Whitehorse's Frantic Follies, Brendan relaxes for several minutes of photographs.
Part of the festivities was the creation of a panoramic photograph of Carcross after the Golden Spike Ceremony. Here's our panoramic photographer setting up the camera.
Here's a view just before the panoramic photo was taken from the viewpoint of Engine 40.
Another part of the festivities was the departure of several private owners of "speeders" as they head toward Skagway near the end of the day. They arrived by rail from Whitehorse the day before and with the exception of carrying their speeders over the paved-over rail on the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse, they rolled the full 110-mile length of the WP&YR.
The KTUU satellite transmitter was also in Carcross to let many in the state see the events.
At the end of a busy day, the crew of "40" completes a bit of routine maintenance.
From atop the boxcar on Extra 40, we look back at the Centennial site in Carcross near the end of the day.
Almost another "steam meet" at the end of the Centennial.
Another photo of the "steam meet" after the official "Meet".
