Engine
73, a 1947 Baldwin locomotive that has spent its entire life
on the WP&YR, is in festive Fourth of July bunting as it
pauses in Centennial Park behind the depot. |
 |
Another
view of 73 on July 4 with its engineer trainee (in tan coveralls)
conversing with a visitor. |
 |
This
and the next two photos show Engine 73 at Glacier Station bridge
as part of Lake Bennett Steam train. These Saturday June through
August steam trains were the only WP&YR scheduled trains
in 2000 that had planned photo stops for the passengers, much
to the delight of the passengers. |
 |
Part
of the photo runby in this 1999 Steam Bennett train was the opportunity
to see 73's tender take on water from the creek below. In earlier
days, there was a water tank here to speed the filling of the
tender. |

Waiting
for the tender to fill... |

Engine
73 with its four coaches at Bennett station preparing to return
passengers (either round trip rail passengers from Skagway or
hikers that have just completed the Chilkoot Trail) to Skagway. |

For
$5.00 to support the Leukemia Society of America, even I can
pull 73's whistle as the locomotive blocks Broadway crossing
at the depot at the start of the relay footrace held in September
1999 from Skagway to Whitehorse, 110 miles away. |
