July 1999 marked the centennial of the arrival of the WP&YR at Lake Bennett. Many attended the festivities including the crew of National Public Radio's West Coast Live program. Here's the Centennial steam train at Bennett Station. Visit West Coast Live's web site for additional pictures of the trip, a full two-hour RealAudio recording of the event including sounds of trip. For the Real Audio program, visit their Past Shows and Real Audio Archives, 1999, July 10. For photos, go to their Photo Library, 1999, Summer Cooler Tour, July 10.
The arrival of the centennial train was greeted by the Tagish First Nation dancers from nearby Carcross and Tagish.
At the podium the dignitaries from the WP&YR and Yukon address the assembled multitude with an RCMP honor guard below the Canadian flag. St. Andrews Church, the only remaining gold rush structure, is visible in the background.
One of the Tagish Dancers deep in thought.
Brendan Heney, great grand nephew of original WP&YR contractor Michael J. Heney, prepares to re-enact the driving the the Bennett Centennial spike, just as he did for the First Spike Centennial in 1998 in downtown Skagway.
Whack! If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Success!
