First spike centennial

The first of many-to-come centennials begins May 28, 1998 on Broadway just outside the historic 1898 WP&YR depot. Several descendants of contractor Michael J. Heney are in attendance including great grand-nephew Brendan, far-right, in coveralls.
With the 1898 WP&YR depot, now the Visitor Center for Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, in the background, Brendan Heney re-enacts the driving of the first spike on temporary track laid on Broadway. Tracks remained on Broadway in active use until the mid-1940s. Note that Brendan's "whack" is being recorded in audio as well as photographically.
